Spouse/Child of Japanese National Visa

A Spouse of Japanese National Visa is for the legal spouse of a Japanese national to accompany them to settle long-term in Japan. A Child of Japanese National Visa is for the child of a Japanese national who is not holding Japanese nationality to accompany their parent to settle long-term in Japan.

Applicants must hold either a New Zealand passport or a valid long-term New Zealand visa (e.g. resident, work, student etc.) and must be residing in the top half of the North Island (Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty Regions and Ruapehu District of Manawatu-Wanganui Region ONLY) to be eligible to apply at the Consulate-General of Japan. If you live elsewhere in the country, please consult the website of the Embassy of Japan in Wellington for required documentation and information on how to apply as it may differ.

Required Documentation

Spouse of Japanese National Visa

For applicants who will be joining a spouse already in Japan:
  1. Valid passport
  2. One passport sized photograph (New Zealand standard size passport photo), taken within the last six months
  3. One completed visa application form (sample)
  4. Original Certificate of Eligibility, plus one photocopy*
  5. Visa fee (if applicable) –due when the visa has been issued
*The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. It can be obtained by your spouse through the local immigration office in Japan on your behalf.


For applicants who will be travelling together with their spouse to Japan:
  1. Valid passport
  2. One passport sized photograph (New Zealand standard size passport photo) , taken within the last six months
  3. One completed visa application form (sample)
  4. Spouse's Family Register (戸籍謄本), original, issued within the last six months
  5. Documents proving your ability to finance your stay in Japan (e.g. bank statements)
  6. A letter of guarantee from your spouse's parent in Japan: (Japanese/English),
  7. If a guarantor isn't perosn above, please prepare the following documentaion from your guarantor in Japan: A letter of Guarantee  (Japanese/English), Certificate of Residence (住民票), Employment Certificate(在職 証明書) and Income Certificate (所得証明書) OR a contract or employment certificate certifying their or their spouse's employment in Japan.

NOTE:
  • Please DO NOT staple documents together or use staple.
  • Additional documentation may be required.
  • No documents other than your passport and Certificate of Eligibility will be returned.
  • Spouse/Child of Japanese National Visas will take a minimum of five working days to be processed. There is NO urgent visa service.
  • Even with possession with a visa, final permission to enter Japan remains at the discretion of the immigration authorities.
  • Applications open three months before the intended date of arrival.

Child of Japanese National Visa

For applicants who will be joining a parent already in Japan:
  1. Valid passport
  2. One passport sized photograph (New Zealand standard size passport photo), taken within the last six months
  3. One completed visa application form (sample)
  4. Original Certificate of Eligibility, plus one photocopy*
  5. Visa fee (if applicable) –due when the visa has been issued
*The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. It can be obtained by your spouse through the local immigration office in Japan on your behalf.


For applicants who will be travelling together with their parent to Japan:
  1. Valid passport
  2. One passport sized photograph (New Zealand standard size passport photo), taken within the last six months
  3. One completed visa application form (sample)
  4. A letter from your parent detailing your reasons for applying for the visa (including such information as reason for travel, intended address in Japan, how you hope to live in Japan, intended work, etc.)
  5. Parent's Family Register (戸籍謄本), original, issued within the last three months
  6. Copy of your Birth Certificate
  7. Documents proving your ability to finance your stay in Japan (e.g. bank statements)
  8. The following documentation from your guarantor in Japan: Letter of Guarantee (Japanese/English), Certificate of Residence (住民票), Employment Certificate (在職証明書) and Income Certificate (所得証明書) OR a contract or employment certificate certifying the parent's employment in Japan.
