How to Apply

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a valid long-term New Zealand visa (e.g. resident, work, student etc.) and must be residing in the top half of the North Island (Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty Regions and Ruapehu District of Manawatu-Wanganui Region ONLY) to be eligible to apply at the Consulate-General of Japan.* If you live in Canterbury, please contact the Consular Office in Christchurch. If you live elsewhere in the country, please consult the website of the Embassy of Japan in Wellington for required documentation and information on how to apply as it may differ. Applications from those in New Zealand on a short-term visitor visa will not be accepted.*

*Exceptions are made for those applicants holding a Certificate of Eligibility.

Application Process

Visa applications must be submitted by the applicant in person. If extraordinary circumstances make it impossible for you to come in person, please contact us.

Please bring your application documents to our office during our visa hours (see below). You do NOT have to make an appointment to apply.

The Consulate-General of Japan is closed on weekends, New Zealand public holidays and some Japanese public holidays. Please see here for a list of our public holidays for 2017.

Payment of Visa Fees

Visa fees vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa for which you are applying. Please see here for more information.

Payment must be made in cash (correct change only). EFTPOS, credit card or cheques are not accepted.

Application with Certificate of Eligibility Three working days
Working Holiday Visa Two to three weeks
All other visas (Temporary Visitor, Transit, etc.) A minimum of five working days


There is NO urgent visa service. Applications that require enquiries to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may take longer than the processing times indicated above. Please allow plenty of leeway. Applications for most visas open three months before the intended date of travel. Applications for Working Holiday Visas can be submitted up to one year before intended date of travel.
