Yoshida Brothers Oceania Tour 2008

The Embassy of Japan in Wellington and the Consulate-General of Japan in Auckland, in association with the Japan Foundation, are extremely pleased to present to you the internationally acclaimed Yoshida Brothers, Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida.

Through incorporating various elements such as jazz, blues and new age rock with its traditional form, these two young Tsugaru-shamisen virtuosos have revived the music of the shamisen, and are rapidly becoming a sensation among all ages throughout Japan and internationally.

Music of the Yoshida Brothers has been highly featured around the world, including the piece “Kodo - Inside the Sun Remix” that featured in the American television commercial of Nintendo’s Wii, and “Sprouting”, which was used in the promotional campaign for the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”.

For the performances in New Zealand, we can look forward to not only the spectacular shamisen solo performances of brothers Ryoichiro and Kenichi, but also collaborations with percussionist Ippiki Takemoto.

The shamisen is a three stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument, resembling a banjo. It has a long, thin neck, and a drum-like rounded rectangular body, known as a do, which amplifies the sound of the strings when plucked with a plectrum called a bachi. The Tsugaru-shamisen is the largest of all shamisen, with both a larger neck and thicker strings which creates a much fuller sound and often lends itself to modern use.
