The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme

The JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme offers New Zealand citizens who hold a university degree or teaching qualification opportunities to teach at primary, junior high and senior high schools as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) or to work in local government organizations as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR).

Applications for the 2025 JET Programme are now closed.  Application forms and guidelines are available on the Embassy website for reference only.

March 2025 Announcement of short-list status for early arrival
Notification of selection/placement for early arrival
April 2025 Announcement of short-list candidates and reserves
6 April 2025 Arrival in Japan for April arrivals
May 2025 Notification of selection and placement
June - December 2025 Notification of reserves being upgraded to the short-list
June/July 2025 Q&A Desk, Pre-departure orientation, visa application, etc
3 August 2025 Arrival in Japan and start of contract

Information sesssions for 2025 JET programme applications were held on the following dates:

Presentations for the 2026 Programme will be held around the same time in 2025. All welcome, no registration necessary.
 

Australian and New Zealand JET Programme Alumni Testimonials

Since its inception in 1987, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme has produced thousands of alumni that can be found working across different sectors and industries globally, harnessing the personal and professional skills and knowledge they developed whilst they were on the Programme.
