Haiku and Shodo Competition Award Ceremony

An award ceremony for the New Zealand Japan Society of Auckland’s Haiku and Shodo contest was held at the Consulate General of Japan in Auckland. The ceremony was attended by prize winners, their families and teachers and President of the NZJS Stephen Duxfield.

This year there were 75 entries to the competition, which were judged according to content and quality of the calligraphy, and the final ranking was decided by interview. Each prize winner was presented their certificate by Consul General Yokoyama, with the top prize winner receiving a one-week homestay trip to Japan and the others receiving book vouchers. Entries will be displayed at the Consulate General of Japan until February 2016.

Winning Entries
1st Prize: Denbigh Kirkbeck (Macleans College)
「ぶきよりも ことばは強い 平和には」
Words are strong than bombs, weapons of peace

2nd Prize: Alan Qiu (Liston College)
「箸と人 二本で一つ 二人いっしょ」
Chopsticks and people, 2 pieces are one set, 2 people together

3rd Prize: Deanna Di (St Dominic’s Catholic College)
「降る雪が 手に消えていく 時間のよう」
Falling snow, disappears in hand, like time

Judges’ Prize: Ryan Orense (Rosmini College)
海の音 心にひびく 好奇心」
The sound of the sea, echoes in my heart, curiosity
