Professional Japanese baseball team the Chiba Lotte Marines donated 1200 baseballs to Baseball New Zealand with the aim of promoting baseball in New Zealand. The Japanese Government covered the costs of transporting these to New Zealand as part of its Sport for Tomorrow programme, and held a donation ceremony at the Consul General’s residence.
The reception was attended by many people including the board of Baseball New Zealand and former professional baseball player Mr Shinya Miyamoto who is in the country to hold a baseball class. Another former professional baseball player and Chiba Lotte Marines alumni Naoyuki Shimizu, who is currently the general manager of Baseball New Zealand and coach for the under 15s, handed the baseballs over to the CEO of Baseball New Zealand Ryan Flynn.
We hope that the donation of these baseballs will lead to further strengthening of sports exchange and baseball exchange between Japan and New Zealand.
