Birkenhead College

2018/8/17

On Tuesday 5 June, consulate staff visited Birkenhead College to meet 39 students (Y9 & Y10) with our special guest, therapy robot seal Paro

The cuddly Paro was very popular with students. Paro, the most famous therapeutic baby seal in the world, intended to be very cute and to have a calming effect on and elicit emotional responses from patients of hospitals and nursing homes, similar to animal-assisted therapy.

We also talked about the difference between Kimono and Yukata (Japanese casual summer kimono) and they learnt how to wear Yukata.  They were especially enthusiastic when they got the chance to try on beautiful and colorful yukata.  Furthermore, students had a big fun playing with Japanese traditional toys such as kendama, Hanetsuki, koma etc.

This topic (Yukata dressing) is one of popular topics for many schools in the Auckland region. We always look forward to meeting students with an interest in Japan and its culture.
