Macleans College

2017/8/24

On Friday 7 July 2017, consulate staff visited two classes (Class1: 21students,Year10 / Class2: 20students, Year10) at Macleans College in Auckland with special guest Ms Kyoko Mikami who is the National Language Advisor for Japanese from ILEP.

All students enjoyed learning Tanabata Star Festival. This seasonal festival is celebrated across Japan during either July or August every year. Writing your wish on a tanzaku and hanging it on a bamboo stalk on the evening of July 7th is one part of celebrating Tanabata. They enjoyed making a Tanzaku and writing their wish and hanging it on a bomboo stalk.

They were especially enthusiastic when they got the chance to try on beautiful and colorful yukata (Japanese casual summer kimono), happi (Japanese traditional coat) and geta ( Japanese traditional foot wear).

It was a great opportunity to introduce Japanese culture through fun activities to encourage them to build interest in learning Japanese language.
