Emperor’s Birthday Reception (10 February 2023)

2023/2/16
On Friday 10 February the Emperor’s Birthday Reception was held at the Consul General’s residence for the first time in 3 years and was attended by more than 200 guests with connections to Japan, including Members of Parliament, Mayor, Deputy Mayors and Councillors of local authorities and members of the Auckland Consular Corps.

The ceremony featured both countries’ national anthems, speeches from Consul General Hamada and Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson and a Kagami-biraki (sake barrel breaking) ceremony.

The reception was an opportunity to deepen friendship between our countries with an Ikebana display on the stage, booths with information about sister-city relations, Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 host towns, origami and promotional material for visiting Japan, Japanese tea tasting and Japanese sake tasting.
