On 29 November 2024, an introduction to Japanese painting was given mainly to members of the Auckland Consular Corps by Nihonga Artist Mr Hisao Okawa at the Consul General’s residence.

We viewed the paintings by Mr Okawa and he explained about Nihonga, traditional Japanese painting, a style rooted in Japan’s unique artistic techniques and aesthetics, followed by a workshop in which the participants enjoyed painting for the first time with a traditional art form that uses black ink.

The event was great success, with participants commenting that it was a good opportunity to learn about the techniques and delicacy of Japanese painting, that it made them feel more familiar with Japanese painting, and that it provided relaxation of the mind, similar to Zen meditation.
