LAST DAY OF VISA APPLICATION IN 2019

 
A Temporary Visitor's Visa is for a stay of up to 90 days in Japan for the purposes of tourism, visiting friends/relatives, business, attending a conference and/or other unpaid activities. Paid or profit-making activities are prohibited on this visa.

New Zealand passport holders do not require a visa to enter Japan for up to 90 days for any of the purposes listed above. For more information about which other countries have visa exemption arrangements with Japan, please see here.

In some cases, it may be possible for nationals of India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and China to apply for a multiple-entry visa for any of purposes listed above. Please click on the name of the country for the relevant information.

Applicants must hold a valid long-term New Zealand visa (resident, work, student) and must be residing in the top half of the North Island (Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty Regions and Ruapehu District of Manawatu-Wanganui Region ONLY) to be eligible to apply at the Consulate-General of Japan.

If you live in Canterbury, please contact the Consular Office in Christchurch. If you live elsewhere in the country, please consult the website of the Embassy of Japan in Wellington for required documentation and information on how to apply as it may differ.

Required Documentation

The Consulate-General of Japan is closed on weekends, New Zealand public holidays and some Japanese public holidays.

For Sightseeing/Visiting Friend(s) or Relative(s)

 
  1. Valid passport:
    • with valid New Zealand Visa (Resident/Work/Student) or COPY of  "E-VISA" (Resident/Work/Student)
    • please transfer your New Zealand visa when you renew your passport, otherwise we can't accept your visa application.
    • no passport cover

  2. One passport size photograph
    • you can use either New Zealand standard passport size OR 45mm x 45mm size
    • must be taken within the last six months
    • Do not scan and print onto paper
    • DO NOT ATTACH WITH STAPLE OR TAPE

  3. One completed original visa application form(sample)
    •   please leave a section blank if you are unsure or if it doesn't apply to you

  4. Flight details of entire trip:
    • issued by travel agent, airline or copy of e-tickets with your passport name on them
    • we do not require proof of purchase, but we do require a confirmed reservation. The Consulate-General of Japan is not responsible for any tickets that become unusable due to visa delay or denial

  5. Proof of sufficient funds:
    • MUST BE A New Zealand Bank Statement 
    • no more than 2 weeks old with current balance and name of the applicant must appear on the statement
    • current balance must show sufficient funds for the trip to Japan
    • there is not a rule about the funding amount you must have because it will depend on your schedule
    • if your friend/relative will financially support your trip to Japan, he/she must provide a letter of guarantee along with New Zealand bank statement (current balance) and copy of passport
    • if you are being supported financially by a guarantor in Japan, please see here for documents your guarantor will need to provide. If you are self-funding your trip, these documents are not usually necessary

  6. A detailed day-by-day schedule of activities while in Japan:
    • you can use our daily schedule form OR feel free to bring your own schedule list (maximum 2 pages)

  7. Itinerary & reservation confiramation:
    • if you are joining the tour group to visit Japan

  8. An invitation letter from your friend(s) or relative(s): (Japanese / English)
    • if you are staying at their place

  9. A COPY of Visa for the next country that you will visit after Japan (if it's applicable):
    • without a visa, we cannot accept your application

  10. If you are aged 17 years of age and under and not applying for a visa with your parent at the same time:
    • please ask your parent or guardian to write a consent letter along with their passport copy (photo page only)

  11. Visa fee: (if applicable)
    • due when the visa has been issued


NOTE:
  • Please DO NOT USE staples/clips/post-it to the documents
  • No documents other than your passport will be returned
  • The minimum assessment time is 5 working days. 
  • Please allow plenty of leeway (it'll take longer; if additional documentation is required due to the nature of the visa application process OR necessary to conduct additional verifications because of the particular circumstances of individual applications)
  • Even with possession with a visa, final permission to enter Japan remains at the discretion of the immigration authorities
  • Visa are only valid from three months from date of issue
  • All applicants 18 years of age and over must appear in person when applying for application or collection of visa

  • You may apply for a Multiple Visa. Please contact us if any of the categories applies to you: legally married to a Japanese national, spouse or child are living in Japan with long term visa (resident, work, study etc...), born as a child of Japanese national, special adoption (特別養子).

For Business / Attending a Conference

  1. Valid passport:
    • with valid New Zealand Visa (Resident/Work/Student) or copy of  "E-VISA"  (Resident/Work/Student)
    • please transfer your New Zealand visa when you renew your passport, otherwise we can't accept your visa application.

  2. One passport size photograph:
    • you can use either New Zealand standard size OR 45mm x 45mm size 
    • must taken within the last 6 months
    • Do not scan and print onto paper
    • DO NOT ATTACH WITH STAPLE OR TAPE

  3. One completed   visa application form (  sample)
    • please leave a section blank if you are unsure or if it doesn't apply to you

  4. Flight details of entire trip:
    • issued by travel agent/airline or copy of e-tickets with your passport name on them

  5. A letter from your company/organisation/school:
    • with letterhead which must include the applicant’s position, nature of the trip, length of stay and the company/organisation/school's financial responsibility for expenses incurred on the trip

  7. If your business/organisation contacts in Japan will bear the cost of your travel and stay in Japan:
    • Letter of guarantee
    • Company register
    • Certificate of employment

  8. If you are self-funding your trip:
    •  a proof of funds (New Zealand bank statements with current balance and applicant's name on them)

  9. Visa fee (if applicable)
    • due when the visa has been issued

    • No documents other than your passport will be returned
    • Temporary Visitor's Visas will take a minimum of five working days to be processed.  Please allow plenty of leeway
    • There is NO urgent visa service
    • All applicants 18 years of age and over must appear in person when applying for application or collection of visa
    • Even with possession with a visa, final permission to enter Japan remains at the discretion of the immigration authorities
    • Visa are only valid from three months from date of issue, so applications open from three months before your intended date of arrival

For School Trip

  1. Valid passport:
    • with valid New Zealand visa (Resident/Work/Student) or copy of "E-VISA"  (Resident/Work/Student)
    • please transfer your New Zealand visa when you renew your passport, otherwise we can't accept your visa application.

  2. One passport size photograph:
    • you can use either New Zealand standard size OR 45mm x 45mm size

    • must be taken within the last six months

  3. One completed original  visa application form ( sample)
    • please leave a section blank if you are unsure or if it doesn't apply to you

  4. Flight details of entire trip:
    • issued by travel agent/airline or copy of e-tickets with applicant's name on them

  5. A letter from the applicant's School/Organisation:
    •  stating the purpose of the visit and schedule in Japan and a list of the students, teachers and parents travelling together to Japan

  6. Invitation letter and details of the schedule in Japan from the Japanese school or organisation:
    • “Toki-bo” corporate registration may also be required

  7. Visa fee: (if applicable)
    • due when the visa has been issued
