Mercury Bay Area School

On Monday 30 March and Tuesday 31 March 2015, consulate staff visited six classes (Year 7&8&10, total 126 students) at the Mercury Bay Area School in Whitianga with special guest Ms Akiko Harada who is the National Language Advisor for Japanese.

Year 7&8 students enjoyed learning Japanese culture and basic Japanese words through the DVD and presentation. Year 10 students had a great fun to learn about Japanese food with suprisingly realistic food replicas.

All students were especially enthusiastic when they got the chance to try on beautiful and colorful yukata (Japanese casual summer kimono), happi (Japanese traditional coat) and geta ( Japanese traditional foot wear).

It was a great opportunity to introduce Japanese language and culture to the students to build interest and awareness of Japanese language learning at their school.
