”World Sushi Day” by Head Chef of Gion Japanese Restaurant Yoshiaki Kugue and Executive Chef for the Consul General of Japan in Auckland (18 June 2025)

18 June is “World Sushi Day” (International Sushi Day), created to celebrate traditional Japanese food culture by sushi fans from all over the world. To mark the occasion, the World Sushi Day event, presented by journalist Mr Lincoln Tan, was held at the Japanese restaurant Gion in Parnell.

The event was attended by Ms Desley Simpson Auckland Council Deputy Mayor, Ms Genevieve Sage Waitemata Local Board Chairperson, Mr Keutekarakia Mataroa Consul General of Cook Islands in Auckland and Mr Hideto Matsudo the representative of Japan Business Club NZ and other guests. They enjoyed Japanese food culture while exchanging their views on many perspectives.

The event featured sushi demonstrations by Mr Yoshiaki Kugue, owner chef of Gion, and Mr Riku Kitazono, Executive Chef for the Consul General of Japan in Auckland, while participants including Southeast Asian sushi lovers enjoyed their own sushi experience and delicious menu prepared by Gion.
 
Consul General MATSUI made a toast to commemorate this first -time celebration event, with the Chefs’ fabulous collaboration and pairing with selected Japanese sake, which greatly contributed to further spreading the pleasure of sushi and washoku culture in Auckland.
