Student Visa

Applicants intending to apply for a Student Visa should in principle obtain a Certificate of Eligibility before applying for the visa. This Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. It can be obtained by the inviting Japanese school through the local immigration office in Japan on your behalf. This means that in principle all applicants are required to have a Japanese school to sponsor them.

You do not have to make an appointment to apply
Simply bring in your application sometime during our consulor office hours: Monday to Friday : 9:00-12:00 or 13:00-15:30 only
The Consulate-General of Japan is closed on weekends, New Zealand public holidays and some Japanese public holidays. Please see here for a list of our public holidays for this year.

Required Documentation
1. Valid passport
* with valid New Zealand Visa (Resident/Work/Student) or COPY OF E-VISA (Resident/Work/Student)
* please tranfer your New Zealand Visa when you renew your passort, otherwise we can't accept your visa applicaiton
* applications from those in New Zealand on a visitor visa will not be accepted
* no passport cover
2. One passport sized photograph (New Zealand standard size passport photo), taken within the last six months
* must be taken within the last six months
* New Zealand standard passport size OR 45mm x 45mm
* please use a proper quality photo. Do not scan and print onto paper
3. One completed visa application form (sample)
* please leave a section blank if you are unsure or if it doesn't apply to you
4. Original Certificate of Eligibility, plus one photocopy
5. Visa fee (if applicable) –due when the visa has been issued

NOTE:
- Please DO NOT staple documents together or use staple.
- Additional documentation may be required.
- No documents other than your passport and Certificate of Eligibility will be returned.
- Student Visas will take a minimum of three working days to be processed. There is NO urgent visa service.
- All applicants must appear in person when applying for application OR collection of visa
- Possession of a visa does not entitle the bearer to enter Japan upon arrival at port of entry if he or she is found inadmissible.
- Applications open three months before the intended date of travel.
